The central event in celebrations for the centenary of Cooperativa Cadí took place today in the Sant Domènec Hall in La Seu d’Urgell, attended by Andreu Mas-Colell, the Catalan Government’s Minister of Economy and Knowledge. Other guests at the event included Albert Batalla, mayor of the city, Monsignor Joan-Enric Vives i Sicília, Bishop of La Seu d’Urgell, Lluís Clotet, president of Cadí, and Jordi Clotet, the cooperative’s CEO, as well as other authorities representing Alt Urgell and Cerdanya counties and the Government of Catalonia.
It was precisely one hundred years ago, on 9 October 1915, that authorisation was given to establish the “Sociedad Cooperative de Lechería de Seo de Urgel”, which is why Minister Mas-Colell was invited to unveil the commemorative plaque marking the centenary of Cadí. In his address, Mas-Colell highlighted the cooperative’s proven capacity to overcome the most adverse circumstances over the last hundred years, as well as stressing that Cadí is one of the most important players in the economic fibre of Catalonia.
The event to celebrate Cadí’s centenary was also attended by the Alt Urgell historian Carles Gascón, who presented a summary of the cooperative’s history, from its beginnings to the present day. Next, the audience was shown a documentary film in which five livestock farming families, all members of the cooperative, explained the Cadí values and philosophy.
The most emotive moment of the evening were the tributes made to members of the Cooperativa Cadí Governing Board. These included a posthumous tribute to the work done by Carles Moliné i Coll, who acted as director of the firm for 26 years, and the warm thanks given to Bonaventura Rebés i Gomà, president of the cooperative for 35 years. Rebés expressed his great happiness at this centenary celebration, and extended his tribute to all those who form part of Cadí, emphasising particularly the collective intelligence of the cooperative.
Taking the stage after these tributes, the cooperative’s president, Lluís Clotet, highlighted the role played by Cadí as an economic driver in the Pyrenean counties, particularly Alt Urgell and Cerdanya. Clotet also noted that one of the keys to Cadí’s success is the obsession with quality and that, thanks to this, the cooperative has been awarded two certificates of origin, for Cadí butter and Urgèlia cheese.
The surprise on the event programme, which took place in a packed Sant Domènec Hall, was an announcement made by Albert Batalla, mayor of La Seu d’Urgell. Batalla informed the gathering that Cooperativa Cadí would shortly be awarded the Medal of Honour of the City. According to the mayor, this award from the city to the cooperative recognises the fact that the cooperative has changed the very physiognomy and economic structure of the territory over the last one hundred years, and is also a mark of thanks for the support in the form of sponsorship that Cadí has always given to the city’s sports clubs and cultural associations.
The event to celebrate the centenary of Cadí was closed by a performance by the Caterva Chamber Choir followed by refreshments at the Parador Turístic hotel in La Seu d’Urgell.
